THE SAME MATERIAL - JENNIFER CAVIOLA

9 OCT - 16 NOV 2020
PEGASUS PRINTS SILKSCREEN STUDIO INAUGURATES ARTIST-RUN EXHIBITION SPACE
CURATED BY EMILY MCELWREATH OF SIDEL & MCELWREATH

Located above the print shop, Pegasus Gallery is an artist-run curatorial initiative that affords the opportunity to invite artists and curators alike to contribute to a rotating exhibitions program. In the same way that the Sahmel’s silkscreen practice yields a highly collaborative dialogue between artist and printmaker, the Pegasus Gallery allows for the exploration into new media, new conversations, and new relationships all through Pegasus as a conduit and creative platform.

The inaugural exhibition at Pegasus Gallery — The Same Material — will feature a selection of 17 works by artist Jennifer Caviola curated by Sidel & McElwreath. Caviola utilizes portraiture as an entry-point to observe and analyze human nature. For the artist, a life-long painter whose craft was handed down to her from her grandmother, the act of painting serves as a salve. With an earnest commitment to contribute to the conversation of universal recovery from generational trauma, Caviolaʼs work seeks to explore the role of painting as facilitator of ancestral clearing. Her portraits offer a moment of convergence with the viewer's own frame of reference. The surface of Caviola’s paintings are bold, saturated, and diffuse. Upon closer inspection, the works reveal layers of deliberate line-work, rendered brushstrokes, nuanced washes, and proficient application of color to portray the poignant and familiar characteristics of their subjects. This attention to the technical qualities of the work stands as a metaphor for the processes undertaken in the Pegasus printshop and therefore position The Same Material as an emblematic exhibition to inaugurate the space.
